As people around the world deal with isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, animals in zoos and aquariums are experiencing something quite different.
Without daily visitors, many animals have more freedom to explore their environments and interact with each other.
This trend has led to some charming encounters, like the penguins at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago touring other exhibits or the orangutans in Belgium’s Pairi Daiza Zoo bonding with otters.

Recently, the Texas State Aquarium treated its residents to a particularly memorable meeting: a face-to-face encounter between their energetic dolphins and Chico, a three-year-old sloth.
This unlikely pairing brought out the dolphins’ playful nature, as they excitedly swam around Chico, captivated by their new friend.
While Chico seemed content and calm on his favorite branch, the dolphins—Shadow, Kai, Liko, and Schooner—could hardly contain their excitement, creating an unforgettable moment for the aquarium’s staff.

The Aquarium has been organizing these cross-species “play dates” as a form of enrichment to keep the animals active and engaged.
As Aquarium staff explained, “We frequently give the animals a chance to ‘meet’ each other to help keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
It’s a fantastic way for them to experience something new, especially while we’re temporarily closed to the public.”

On his tour, Chico didn’t just meet dolphins; he also had close-up views of ducks, seahorses, sharks, and even colorful fish. Yet, nothing seemed to intrigue him more than the lively dolphins, who eagerly observed his every move.

These animal interactions have become popular on social media, where the Aquarium shares stories and virtual experiences to connect with audiences worldwide.
“We’re committed to engaging and educating our followers with stories like this,” the staff shared, highlighting how these virtual connections offer viewers a way to stay connected with nature and learn from home.

Though Chico maintained his calm demeanor throughout, his adventure created a delightful experience that both he and his playful dolphin companions won’t soon forget.
