When Officer Angela Laurella of the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Florida responded to a call about an abandoned dog, she wasn’t prepared for the heartbreaking scene she’d find.
A frail Pit Bull was tied so tightly to a pole he could barely move. But instead of backing away in fear, the dog did something remarkable — he reached out his paw, as if asking for help.

The dog, later named Liam, was dangerously underweight and had clearly endured long-term neglect. Despite his condition, he showed a quiet trust in Officer Laurella, who approached him slowly and gently.
“He kind of cowered and gave her his paw, as if to say, ‘Please help get me out of here,’” said Amy Roman of the rescue group 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida.

After being untied and offered food by Laurella, Liam was taken in by the rescue organization. With no microchip and no clues about who abandoned him, his past remains a mystery. But his future began to brighten almost immediately.

At around four years old, Liam had suffered greatly. He was severely malnourished, with bones and ribs visible beneath his skin, and his eyes deeply sunken. “Definitely abused,” Roman noted. Yet despite it all, Liam remained sweet and affectionate, leaning on his rescuers as he healed.

Thanks to weeks of care, Liam regained his strength and spirit. Before long, he was ready for adoption — and he didn’t have to look far. Two members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, touched by his story, welcomed him into their family. Now, Liam spends his days running joyfully through his new home, a testament to resilience and the power of kindness.
While those who mistreated Liam have yet to be identified, his rescuers are focused on what truly matters: that Liam is finally safe, loved, and living the life he always deserved.
