It may sound straight out of The Lion King, but this unique friendship between a lion cub and a meerkat is real.
Known as Zinzi and Bob, the pair live together at a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa, where their bond has captivated everyone around them.

This remarkable relationship began when Marcell Tournier, owner of a zoo and game ranch, took in Zinzi, a lioness cub, at just one day old.
Zinzi’s mother had rejected her, so Marcell stepped in, giving the cub a second chance. Like Simba from Disney’s famous story, Zinzi found herself separated from her family and unexpectedly bonded with a free-spirited meerkat.

Bob, a wandering meerkat, visits Marcell’s property often, especially for the occasional free meal. The spirited meerkat has a “Hakuna Matata” outlook on life, which Marcell believes has helped Zinzi relax and adapt.
Marcell notes, “Bob seems to have a carefree, problem-free philosophy and has taught Zinzi how to take things easy.”

Despite the typical aggressive nature of meerkats, Bob was instantly friendly with Zinzi, showing an uncommon gentleness.
He even spends his days mingling with other animals on the farm, including hyenas and leopards, who seem to tolerate his quirky personality. “Bob pretty much runs the whole farm,” Marcell jokes.

The sprawling sanctuary, called Predator World Zoo and Game Farm, covers 1,000 hectares and is home to over 36 species, including leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and various birds and reptiles.
Here, Zinzi and Bob’s friendship is a testament to the unexpected bonds that can form in nature, reminding us that sometimes, life does mirror the magic of movies.
